The HRD direct broadcast is an X-band continuous downlink from NOAA JPSS satellites of mission environmental data to users on the ground that are equipped with a suitable receiver when the satellite is within view. Offering over 20 times faster data transfer than HRPT, this enables the use of more modern instruments with higher resolution and more channels.

Signal characteristics[edit]

Suomi NPP and JPSS-1 (NOAA-20): 15 Msym/s, QPSKQuadrature Phase-Shift Keying (2 bits per symbol). JPSS-2 (NOAA-21) and beyond: 25 Msym/s, OQPSK.

Suomi NPP and NOAA 20 have visible filler data about every 2 seconds, NOAA 21 has no visible filler.
