UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is a 3rd generation mobile phone technology developed by the 3GPP partnership. Unlike 2G GSM, UMTS uses CDMACode Division Multiple Access (Code Division Multiple Access) technology. Despite UMTS using CDMACode Division Multiple Access technology, it is a different standard than cdmaOne and CDMA2000, competing 2G and 3G standards developed by 3GPP2. UMTS is further improved and extended to support higher data rates by the HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) standard.
